Movies which include both the Gangster and Romance genre.

Gangster movies have been around for very long, and all have seen a great success over the years whether that be the Hollywood movies such as the Iconic God father or the low budget ‘Ghetto’ gangster movies such as Kidulthood. Though both are gangster movies they also involve the theme of love to not over do with the action, power and aggressive attitude. Another reason to why the theme of love would be involved in these movies is because audiences may gain personal identification through the movie and this can be a key factor on appealing to audiences.

Romance/Gangster.

The amalgamation of the genres Gangster and Romance has been used several of times in order to gain more than just the male audiences. The action and activeness from the Gangster genre movies appeals to more of a male orientated audience whereas the romance element enables a sense of emotion to run through the movie and attract female audiences too.

Codes and conventions of a Romance Movie.

The codes stereotypically associated with Romance movies are:
Relationship between a male and female protagonist
Parks
Sunny days sometimes
Rainy days sometimes
House/houses
Happiness
Struggles
Arguments
Sometimes a third person/villain.

These are all the expectations a media consumer may have when they think of a Romance movie.

Romance

Romance films typically are based upon two protagonists who have a romantic relationship with one another. The appeal of romance films is the prominent dramatic emotions which the characters convey in the movie. The theme of romance within movies is said to be the main attraction of female audiences as it is more about people and their emotions which highly contrasts with action which tend to attract a more male based audience due to movies aggressive nature.

Many people associate Romance movies with chick flicks but this is not necessary true because ‘chick flicks’ may not be plotted upon a romantic relationship between the main characters.

Codes and conventions of gangster genre through 1900s from all influences

  • 1930s: smart suits, acts of violence, murder, weapons and luxury items associated with the life style such as cigars and fine liquor, these influences was form Al Capone as he was well known for fulfilling all the above conventions. He wore the most expensive suits, constantly smoked cigars and once stabbed someone to death at a dinner party with a fork.

  • 1980s: codes and conventions changed dramatically after the release of Scarface. The conventions now focus more on drugs and money eg. Cocaine, the original conventions are a lot more detailed; violence is more graphic, more use of guns, better clothing suits more appealing, and leading characters status is emphasised a lot.

20th century: Conventions slightly changed as there was more influence form street crime,
racial discrimination which resulted to the original convention of violence and murder.
Another reason why this culture grew so much is due to east coast and west coast arguments in gangster rap between artist such as Biggie (east coast) and Tupac (west coast)
